I’m not much of a rugby fan but I did spot a photo of rugby player Dan Carter doing yoga on the field. It’s a variation of a lunge with a twist.

I love adding twists into lunges because you get all the benefits of a lunge with a little movement in your back, shoulders and chest, but I would recommend twisting in the opposite direction of Dan.

lunge with a twist

  1. Start with your feet hip width apart. Bend down and step your left foot back.
  2. Keep your left heel over the top of your toes and make sure your front right knee is over the top of or behind your right ankle.
  3. With your left fingertips or palm on the ground, bring your right hand to your right knee.
  4. Press down with your right hand and lift your right shoulder, starting to look to the right and beginning the twist in your upper torso.lunge with twist hand on knee
  5. If this feels ok, lift your right hand up to the sky and maybe look up.
  6. Don’t forget about your legs though! Press down through your front foot as if you’re pushing that foot through the ground. And feel as if your pulling your thighs together, especially pulling your back thigh forward.
  7. When fished, step your back foot forward and change sides. Or change in down dog and get a bonus stretch.
