Photos of triangle or trikonasana pose often show a version that requires more flexibility than the average body. As we’ve gotten smarter about how our bodies work, particularly how they change over time with aging, inactivity and repetitive movement, we’ve changed our ideas about what’s healthy for our bodies.

In yoga this change is particularly obvious in triangle pose. We used to tell people to imagine their body was squished between two plates of glass. But this moves the hip in a unsafe place for the sacrum and back. We’re now encouraging people to let the hip roll forward and down, and like so much of the yoga I teach, just to a place that feels right for your body.

Watch this brief 4 minute video to see the old versus new position for the hips.
