Balance isn’t just important for trampers – it’s essential for us all. Working on your balanceĀ uses the muscles around your joints helping them to gain strength and ultimately protect your joints.

I recently went tramping in the Tararuas just beyond Powell Hut to take a few photos for an upcoming project. I kept wobbling when doing balance poses and the photographer was surprised I found it hard to balance – you see balancing gets easier, but it’s never easy!

The more you wobble – the better – the more your muscles are working. You can work on balancing anywhere!

So try standing on one leg next time you’re…:

  1. Waiting for the kettle to boil
  2. Cooking your dinner
  3. Brushing your teeth

Want a challenge? Try closing your eyes.

And one tip (which you can see me doing in this photo), squeeze your middle finger with your thumb and keep continuously pressing – it does more than you think.
