People often tell me it’s hard to actually do yoga at home. They have the best of intentions, but there is always something else in the way, or sometimes its just hard to get motivated.

It’s really helpful to realise that doing yoga at home (at work, on holiday, or anywhere else) doesn’t have to look or feel like the weekly classes you go to.

In fact, just taking a couple of minutes to do one thing can have a big impact. I mean that literally. Just 2 minutes to do some stretching, gentle movement, breathing practice or meditation can help manage chronic pain and tension. It can help with stress.

It can also be a gateway drug to a little more yoga. Once you get going with that one thing for 2 minutes, you might realise there’s another thing for a few extra minutes that would feel good. Before you know it, you will be doing yoga on your own.

In fact, the secret is just that – what would feel good? Don’t change your clothes. Don’t get a yoga mat. Don’t clear things out of the way. Don’t worry about a quiet space.

Instead of trying to think of a pose, or search through online videos:

  1. Close your eyes.
  2. Relax your breath.
  3. Ask yourself – what would feel good?
  4. Then do one thing that would feel good in any way that seems possible.

When I say would feel good, again, I mean literally. Would it feel good to lie down, bend over, twist, massage your feet, roll your shoulders, close your eyes, relax your mind, balance on your toes, do a lunge, stretch your hands or fingers?

Doubtful? Then try it. You are smarter than you think. When given the chance, you do know what you need. Just don’t over think.
